The part at the end where he has his hands on the lady's head and later coughs reminds me of The Green Mile, where the big fella draws the evil or injury out of a person with his own breath or touch and then has to cough it up later.

You know what gets me? The shaman is clearly a little old man and yet I can't for the life of me see a grey hair on his head. Funny that.

Isn't that marvelous? That is very true of most native Andeans, including those who live in the jungles.

Position really doesn't matter. Its the frame of mind and the belief in what is being done that matters. If the persons own mind does not accept what is really going on then nothing can ever happen for them.
The powers lie within the shaman to heal, and the believer to accept the help. If either are not 100% in their believes, then it all fails.
Its hard for any shaman to gain 100% acceptance from persons any more in our current society of doubt, fear, and mistrust.

I guess a little pagan cleansing ceremony won't do no harm, it reminds me of the X-ray and MRI ceremony I had preformed on me in a hospital once when I hurt my back, I believe the person that took me there was some sort of warlord!
