Storm Preps At Boy Scout Camp Upset Parents

Back

It was a difficult night at Camp Naish Thursday when a tornado warning was sounded. Some of the 800 Boy Scouts, staff and leaders went to shelters, but others stayed in their tents or on hillsides. Among those in tents were the boys from Leavenworth Troop 167. Some parents and Scout leaders said the emergency plans were inadequate. The previous night, four Boy Scouts had been killed when a tornado touched down at a camp in Iowa. "My problem is I felt that the procedures are incorrect and flawed. The boys should have been moved to a structure," Scoutmaster Steve Henry told KMBC's Peggy Breit. "We need to change some policies at Camp Naish," said Mike Owens, the parent of a Boy Scout. Owens said he was assured there was plenty of shelter at the camp, and he thought that's where the Scouts would go during the storm. But Owens said one of the Scouts called another parent and said they were told to stay in their tents. Some parents were so concerned they went to pick up their children from the camp. Scout leaders said all of the boys were safe. Meanwhile, the camp said there are plans for more permanent shelters to be built, but they haven't been constructed yet.
