There's actually 4 books (Darkly Dreaming Dexter · Dearly Devoted Dexter · Dexter in the Dark · Dexter by Design). Much of the second season had little to do with the second novel, Dearly Devoted Dexter, although they both shared a subplot concerning a suspicious Doakes following Dexter. This may be why they are going into a 5th season, though I'm sure they could extend some of the stories to go beyond that.

Nope. In fact, a good bit of Season 1 didn't follow the book. Not that it's a bad thing. The book went too much into fantasy for my taste. Still good, though. The (larger) insight into Dexter's mind was very interesting.

yes there is 3 books and it has been confermed now there will b season 4 n 5 and posibly 6th :)
