The Cave Monastery at Orheiul Vechi
BackAKA The Guide, The Other Guide, the Monk, and Me September 2006: I took a day trip from Chisinau to Orheiul Vechi. My hotel organised a guide for me (she was incredibly knowledgeable!), who came with a trainee guide and also a driver. So the whole entourage drove out there and met the last remaining monk living at Old Orhei. A very special place and a must-see if you're in Moldova. Some notes on the clip: *As we drive through the village of Trebujeni below the monastery you'll see piles of rocks by the roadside. These are collected from the limestone cliffs by the locals and sold as building materials. *As you'll hear the guide remark, the monk was actually reading a teach-yourself-English book when we arrived. *The opening track is by Fanfare Ciocarlia *The closing track is by the Boban Markovic Orchestra. *The guide had been called up with only about an hour's notice and, as she remarked, her high heels were not the best footwear for clambering about the slopes of Orhei. *In September 2007 Orheiul Vechi was submitted for inclusion in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
