Orangutan Does Housework

Back

A 49 year-old Orangutan at a Japanese zoo has developed a taste for house cleaning. Visitors to the Tama zoo in Tokyo watch as Gypsy the orangutan methodically cleans her enclosure. It is thought she learnt how to house clean by imitating the zoo's cleaners. www.itnsource.com

Yes, the orangutan is "aping," (joke), a taught human behavior. It has already been captured/rescued, and is likely better off than it might have been (shot, beaten to death, burned, etc.--whatever the case, it's neither bored, nor displaying "typical" caged behaviors. I am glad to see that it is in apparent good health and is safe from the poachers' guns. So, okay.

Oh and it's never your fault is it snoopy? Anyway the orangutan is enjoying herself and if it is in her nature to do it (it is because it has the brain skills to mimic human activity) let her do it, she could be enjoying herself.

Anything that creates awareness of how amazing these creatures are is a good thing. Perhaps if we realize how closely they resemble us we might do more to save them. Right now we are cutting down their habitat to make wood for the Olympics cycling stadium in China. Boy is humanity shortsighted

its harmless! apes mimic, thas all.... its clearly taken care of and seems happy enough! its not chained down, its not being used for meat. Ive seen zoo's being cleaned before where the chimps/orangs pick up sponges and brushes and mimic what the keeper is doing. Im with you 100% about belonging to its natural habitat, but simple fact is it cant go there can it, many animals like this are in captivity for breeding purposes, so our children CAN see them in years to come

Also how do you know this one was not rescued from something like its mother being killed for bush meat? I agree 100% that the rain forest being destoryed is total bullshit. But the good thing is there is alot of people out there like me. Who love apes/monkeys and wildlife enough to help them and take care of them when the home they come from becomes too dangerous or destoryed.

well i think putting them in zoo is a good thing. they have a comfortable lifestyle, teaches people about animals and their endangerment and protects them from the declining forests.
