May 2004 For Chechen civilians, Russia's 'clean-up' operations amounts to little more than genocide. Even Russian soldiers condemn their actions in Chechnya. When Ivan volunteered to fight in the second Chechen war, he had scant understanding of what he would experience. Even now, he remains deeply troubled by his time there. Lack of supplies and widespread alcoholism fuelled acts of brutality. His ill equipped unit had little choice but to rob civilians. "We had to feed ourselves. Of course we turned to looting. Of course we'd kill," he says. He believes the Chechens are being forced into acts of terrorism out of desperation and revenge. "We'd come in the house and kill five people -- one survives, they have nothing to live for and it becomes blood for blood." 60 year old Sowdat has seen two of her children killed by the Russians. Another two have disappeared without a trace. "It's genocide and it's conducted openly," states Rusen Badalov, of the Chechen Salvation Committee. Despite Putin's assurance to the contrary, Chechens believe that a bloody war is being waged against them. Daily 'disappearances' in every village tell the same story. It seems that Russia's campaign to impose order is creating the terrorism they mean to crush.

Chechnya war is bullshit, just like Iraq and Afghanistan. They need to stop. We need decent leaders. No corporate or secret service people leading super powers. This world will get fucked up if we prove our selves democracy doesn't work.

For some time it was. but not Russia, the USSR, all your railroads, all your infrastructure was made by USSR, or may be you want to disagree? Nowadays, of course, Baltic countries are independent,and it's Ok.

But still. this is awful- I do believe in self determination--but in the end, who ever has the power will hold on to a disputed area. Like Israel--they have the most weapons, the most foreign aid--they get to take Palestinian land.

Everybody is shitting his pants about Katyn, but nobody cares for the fact that Ukrainian nationalists killed about 4x more people in Poland during WW2. Their mini-Hitler Bandera is a hero now. It's hot to be an oppressed minority and everyone just shits on Russia, because that's what Russia is for. Took all the violence of the Mongols on its back, freed Europe from Napoleon and Hitler, 95% of the population always suffering and getting mocked abroad. What a queer fate that is.

And besides nobody mentions the genocide against the Russian population even before the 1st Chechen war was launched. Who cares if some Russians die. In 1932-33 in all agrarian areas of the SU people starved to death, but now the Ukrainians are acting as if those evul Russians committed a genocide against them just like the Germans did against the Jews. When the Baltic states were invaded by Stalin, many local Russians were killed, but nobody cares.
