actually, i interpreted it as he doesnt NEED a witness because he can do this on his own.. like he is defying the need for someone else to see. and just becuase love stories sell doesnt mean andrew has to transform an amazing song into one just so it will sell. andrew is way above that and quite frankly i'm shocked that he altered the intentions of this song just so it would be more popular..which is what you're implying..

derf. didn't mean to imply that. and the video doesn't dictate the song's meaning, that's up to the listener. the video does come across as a love story but the mermaid could also symbolize the narrator's self or quest, the gender is irrelevant. maybe i'm biased because i work retail management, but it does seem uncanny that s. meyer directed and wrote the concept after twilight's popularity... business is necessary for musicians now. still a powerful song, that doesn't detract from it.
